34 intrepid frontiersmen and a guest ventured westward to Jerez de la
Frontera arriving at the “Tierras de Jerez” Hotel, our base for two
nights. (Shame about the broom cupboard Sandra).
A
visit to the Tio Pepe (Uncle Joe) bodega ensued where they were given
chapter and verse by Roberto on the history of this the Gonzalez Byass
company, producers of Sherry,
Brandy and Wine. Tio Pepe is one of many bodegas in Jerez, The British
Sandeman and Harvey’s Bristol Cream companies being two others within
the city.

The following
two days were spent either by taking train and ferry journeys to Puerto de
Santa Maria and Cádiz or locally in Jerez the largest city in the
province of Cádiz.
History of
centuries around every corner, one thing’s for certain too much to take
in, in one short visit, many days could be spent in both Cádiz and Jerez
without scratching the surface of what there is to offer, castles,
monuments, churches, museums, markets and the like; not forgetting the
Cartujana horses and Andalusian Flamenco Centre. Many of those that
travelled expressed their intention to return another time to this
beautiful part of Spain, myself included.
Our
thanks to the organisers, in particular Linda Kemp and Barry Green.
